This episode is a little deviation from our usual Java-from-the-trenches talks to a subject that is a little more experimental but still very interesting. In this one I talk to Nadav Weiner about 9P, a network protocol developed for the Plan 9 from Bell Labs distributed operating system. I didn't know about 9P before Nadav told me about it. The idea of a network protocol to implement a virtual distributed file system with a programmatic API sounded very interesting and so we set out to explore the possibilities for the Java developer.

You can find more resources on the topics we talk about in the following links:

In this episode of the AlphaPub, we've discussed some of our dilemmas when dealing with a new vanilla (AKA Greenfield) project.
Some of which are:
  • Choosing between a full blown JEE Application Server or taking the lightweight approach of a Dependency Injection Container.
  • Going all the way with Hibernate solution or trying to stay with JPA as much as we can.
  • Choosing the right Web UI framework for the project.
  • Selecting between Tomcat or Jetty as the Web Container.
  • Presenting our preferred development supporting tools such as: IDE, Build tools, Build servers, Version Control System and Issue Tracker.

Hi,

This episode is an interview with Alef Arendsen, a co-founder of SpringSource (originally interface21). Alef was kind enough to talk to us on his recent visit to Israel. in this talk Alef talks about the Spring Framework, and presents some of the other Spring products. This is quite a diverse talk as Spring cover a broad range of Java development areas.

We talk about Spring's offerings for the OSGi model, specifically Spring Dynamic Modules for OSGi and the Spring Application Platform. We asked Alef about Spring's atittude towards the JEE spec and specifically the upcoming version 6. Alef talks about the technical roadmap of some of the Spring products. We learnt that SpringSource intend to further improve their support for the RESTful model, based on their current web framework Spring MVC which has a good REST mapping support. Alef talks about Spring's choice to provide an action based MVC framework as opposed to different models like RiA platforms or component based frameworks.

We touched on many other interesting issues, this was a very interesting talk.

Please note - the audio quality in this episode is not optimal. We had some trouble with the mic connection which we only found out about too late. We did our best to eliminate the noises. The content is superb though, and well worth your time.

Hope you enjoy it.

Hey ya'll,

This is our first recording. In this episode Fred Simon, Yoav Landman and myself are discussing OSGi, the sweet spots, the pain points and the potential. About halfway through we digress to talk about the Scala language which has nothing to do with the topic at hand but still makes for a very interesting conversation.

Audio quality is not optimal but will get better. In fact, it has considerably improved in our last recording which will be published soon.

Listen, enjoy, let us know what you think,

Ophir Radnitz
